How to prepare for your lifestyle newborn session

Lifestyle newborn sessions are always so much fun and just so special. It’s amazing to be able to capture those first moments and first memories with the baby finally in your arms. Knowing you have to prepare for a session when you’ve just settled back home can be a little overwhelming so here are my tips to help you prepare for your session!

Booking Your Session

Most families book their lifestyle newborn session around the same time they are booking their maternity photos. We will go ahead and schedule your session based on your due date. We want to schedule the session within the first two weeks of baby’s arrival. Of course baby’s don’t always follow your due date schedule, so we can always revisit and reschedule as needed. I want to make sure you are home, feeling comfortable and healthy when we do the session!

Preparing the Space

So many times I’ve walked in to a family’s home and they immediately apologize for the mess. Please - don’t worry! You’ve just had a baby!! Focus on the few spaces you are hoping for photographs in and tidy up as best you can. These can be the nursery, the master bedroom, the living room, anywhere you love! If we need to move things during the session it is no problem at all! I will look for pockets of pretty light throughout the house so we may end up using other places as well!

Preparing Baby

Newborns are a little unpredictable so again, don’t worry! I’ve had newborn sessions where the baby is happy and slept the entire time, but I’ve also had sessions where the baby is fussy and awake. Let me tell you - I’ll get the photographs! Don’t worry! My best tips are to feed the baby right before the session (make sure you cover the favorite outfit in case of spit up/blow outs - I’m speaking from my own personal experience on this one ;) ) Keep the house comfortably warm for the baby. And if you need to feed or change the baby during the session, always feel free!

Baby Portraits

I always want to make sure I get several photos of the baby by themselves including detail shots of those tiny fingers and toes. I will get shots focused on the baby while they are being held as well as on their own. All we really need for that is a comfy space with a blanket and a swaddle. I like to keep it simple! If you have any special items you want to include in your session such as gifted or handmade keepsakes, just let me know!

Just Relax!

I know, easier said than done! But really, you just had a baby - that’s amazing! Take the time during the session to really enjoy it. Look at those little toes, the chubby cheeks and thighs. Snuggle as much as you can. Really focus on the moment and how big this time in your life is!
