Fall Family Mini Sessions + 7 Tips For How To Maximize Your Mini Photo Session

‘Tis the season for fall family mini photo sessions! Autumn in Virginia is simply breathtaking, I love this time of year! From fall outfits and accessories to the colorful, rolling landscapes, these photos make great holiday card options.

Here are seven of my veteran professional family portrait photography tips on how to make the most of your mini family photo session.

Tips for family portrait sessions:

  1. Interactive Poses: when interacting with each other, make sure you smile through no matter what the kids are doing. We’re capturing genuine moments and nothing is more real than kids being kids :)

  2. Wardrobe Choices: elevated yet comfortable outfits that allow for movement and play are always a good idea. Aim for coordinated colors, but nothing too matchy-matchy to create love-able, timeless portraits.

  3. Genuine Storytelling: candid shots are true moments and the ones you’ll cherish - let go, enjoy, be real, and let the everyone’s personalities shine through!

  4. Time Strategy: we’ll get the posed, smiling photos first/early on in the session before the kids lose interest and patience.

  5. Couple Shots: let’s give the the kids a little break - mom and dad need some photos too!

  6. Get Real: embrace the season of life you’re in and the activities & things you do as a family (ie. tickle fights, airplane, racing, etc)

  7. Be Present: don’t worry about being perfect - just be present and enjoy the moment :)

BONUS tip: Have a pet? Bring them along! They bring out so much real JOY and it really shows in the images!
